Chapter Twenty-Two

Fury

Diamond Creek, Nebraska,

Pulling up to the gate, I rolled down my window, hearing the hinges groan as a prospect emerged from the guard shack. His footsteps crunched on the gravel as he approached. Seeing the word Prospect over the name Archie on his cut, I leaned against the door and said, “Prospect. Go get Matlock”

“He’s in church.”

“Then call him.”

The young kid blinked several times, then gulped and slowly shook his head. “Can’t do that. He will kill me.”

I smirked at that.

Nice to know my former friend still hadn’t lost his touch.

“So will I if you don’t make that call.” I issued a warning while simultaneously opening my coat to show him the gun tucked into my waistband, leaving no doubt about the seriousness of my intentions. Fear choked the kid, making him gulp before he could even begin to walk back to the looming guard shack. Watching the kid fumble with his phone, I leaned back against the worn leather headrest and sighed, the scent of old upholstery filling my nostrils. Yeah, I felt awful about scaring the kid, but the constant feeling of being watched ever since we left Chicago was unnerving.

I didn’t want to upset Carly, so I kept it to myself. I had no intention of visiting any motorcycle clubs, knowing that such a visit would inevitably get back to Montana. However, given that I was positive we were being followed, I had no other option.

I would not risk Carly or the kids.

The problem was, picking a club that would keep their mouths shut.

I wasn’t stupid. I fucking knew Montana had brothers out looking for me. I knew he put the word out to all our allies to keep an eye out. I just prayed that Montana overlooked the smaller chapters. Then again, showing up out of the blue without an invitation or prior warning was cause for concern. I was hoping against hope that my former friend could convince his president that I wasn’t someone to be feared or viewed as a threat.

Archie stuck his head out of the guard shack and asked, “Name?”

“Fury.”

The prospect frowned but relayed my name.

Of course, I should have known the second he did that the warm welcome I hoped for would vanish, because in the next instant, the kid slammed the guard shack door shut and literally ducked low to the ground, believing the guard shack would protect him.

Rolling my eyes, I stayed put as I watched the front doors of the clubhouse open and out walked the Silver Shadows MC.

I watched in disbelief as my former friend leisurely walked toward me, taking his time, each step seeming to take an eternity. Despite the passage of time, the fucker remained unchanged, and when he casually leaned against my SUV to inspect it, I couldn’t resist making a snide comment. “What? No hello for a friend?”

The big fucker shrugged his shoulders and frowned. “Are we still friends?”

Rolling my eyes, I groaned. “I wasn’t the one who up and fucking left without a word, Tony.
